20th Anniversary Reunion Show

Graflin Booth had the foresight twenty years ago to start a dance program that aired initially on Saturday mornings. He brought the latest and greatest dance music during that time into Memphis and surrounding area airwaves. By the time he gave up his throne at WEVL, Graflin had several residencies at local clubs, thrown several successful parties in the Midsouth with the help of his talented friends, and made the name Graflin on the radio and the local dance scene a household name of every dance music enthusiast in the Memphis area. This all happened out of love for the music and sharing that music with as many people as possible. Graflin is truly a legend that who can still be caught occasionally driving a dance floor into a frenzy here in Memphis, or at the Annual Love Parade in Germany. If you have not danced to one of his fluid, flawless sets yet, you are definitely missing out on one of the best times of your life!

Stephen Schocke took over the longest running dance show in the U.S. in 1995. By then, the primitive sound of dance music had blossomed into a multi-colored arrangement of specific genres. Stephen continued the tradition of giving the audience a variety of music to hear. His true enthusiasm was focused on the dynamics of a progressive set, and Stephen did this with the same degree of acute awareness and skill as any world class DJ. Like Graflin, having a radio program was not enough time spent sharing the music. Stephen also held residencies in Memphis while he kept DJing on WEVL. For eleven years he brought you the best dance music, rarely missing a show. Stephen is truly a dedicated man that deserves recognition and appreciation.

June 13th's Reunion is a salute to the station, DJs and the audience that made it possible to recognize a two-decade milestone in dance music history. If one of these parts of the equation were eliminated, I would not have enjoyed last night as much as I did. I want to thank Judy and Brian at WEVL, Graflin, Stephen and especially you for giving us 20 years of The Hitchhiker's Dance Guide on FM 89.9, and now on wevl.org, too.
