August 22: Memphis DJ Summer's Night

Memphis DJ N8 has a summer compilation called Passages vol.1 that is completely remarkable, and relfects what he has been spinning the past few months. I started out with this progressive mix from a Memphis veteran (that actually showed his skills live on the HHDG on March 21, 2009.) I was proud to present to you his latest CD as a reminder that he still mixes live at Blufin on Main Street in downtown Memphis.

Graflin & Stephen Recorded Live in The Underworld at the Apocalypse on August 14, 1999:
01 Celvin Rotane - Houze Muzique
02 Mantra - Clap Your Hands
03 Steel-Belted Pirate - Swashbuckle
04 Pete Bones - Discotech
05 Cascade - Escape
06 Carl Cox - Future 2000 (Hybrid Remix)
07 Mike Koglin - The Silence (Tekara Remix)

The Sky Patrol's 1st Recorded Live DJ set at The Liquid Lounge on July 27, 2005:
I was there that night when The Sky Patrol performed on Ableton Live off his G5 Mac. At the time, I had never seen anything like that. He took samples from random places and inserted them within the music and entertwined tracks together in such a way to make it seem like a fine flowing stream of electronica rotating around the dancing body. The trip was worth taking, for sure, because reality and the dreamstate became one entity. I realized by There's No Difference by The MFA that he knew what it takes to get the crowd moving. It was not all about moving a crowd for him though. The Sky Patrol was also a guide into unknown territory of minimal, tech & progressive dance music. Uncharted depths of the dark world of electronica had a weird illumination around the cores of each track that spiraled into a netherworld - including Britney Spears' Breathe On Me, remixed by Holden. The last couple tracks of James Holden remixes of Come To Me into The Sky Was Pink sealed the deal for me by sucking me into a blackhole and taking me to the other side where there was complete aural bliss.

I want to thank all the talented Memphis DJs that I featured this night for sharing their music with me, and letting me record - or simply giving me recordings of -brilliant DJ sets so that ultimately I could play them for you on WEVL.

I appreciate N8, The Sky Patrol, and the two former HHDG DJs: Graflin & Stephen. You are all awesome inspirational icons in Memphis!
